PERINTON, N.Y. (WHEC) — While making a campaign speech Thursday night at a VFW in Perinton, Congressman Lee Zeldin was attacked by a disgruntled man in the crowd. After a brief tussle, members of the audience took matters into their own hands—by disarming and apprehending the attacker with zip-ties pulled from campaign posters.

During his "Unite to Fire Hochul" bus tour stop in Perinton Thursday night, Zeldin was interrupted by an audience member that was making comments like "okay, you're done," according to onlookers.

After a brief time, Monroe County Sheriff's arrived and detained the attacker, who has been identified as David G. Jakubonis, 43, of Fairport.

Jakubonis is currently being questioned but no charges have been filed at this point.

Congressman Zeldin went back on stage to finish his remarks and thank the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene.

“Congressman Zeldin, Alison Esposito and all members of Team Zeldin are safe following tonight’s attack. Far more must be done to make New York safe again. This is very much getting out of hand in this state. Unfortunately, Congressman Zeldin is just the latest New Yorker whose life has been affected by the out of control crime and violence in New York. This needs to stop! Thankfully, we still have exceptional men and women in law enforcement answering the call to protect our streets.”

Governor Hochul put out the following Tweet:

My team has informed me about the incident at Lee Zeldin's campaign event tonight. Relieved to hear that Congressman Zeldin was not injured and that the suspect is in custody. I condemn this violent behavior in the strongest terms possible — it has no place in New York.
