ROCHESTER N.Y POLICE OFFICERS AMBUSHED ONE SHOT AND KILLED ANOTHER INJURED Empty ROCHESTER N.Y POLICE OFFICERS AMBUSHED ONE SHOT AND KILLED ANOTHER INJURED

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Rochester Police say that two of its officers, Anthony Mazurkiewicz and Sino Seng, were shot in the line of duty Thursday night in the area of Bauman Street. Officer Mazurkiewicz has died, according to our sources.

Police say that at approximately 9:15 p.m., a male individual ambushed the two officers and shot them while in the area of Bauman Street. The officers were working their detail at the time they were shot.

Mazurkiewicz was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died from at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. He was a 29-year veteran of RPD.

Seng was taken to Rochester General Hospital and is now at home recovering from at least one gunshot wound to the lower body.

Police say that an uninvolved woman was also shot. She was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

No suspects are in custody at this time.

RPD Chief David Smith said that over 13 police agencies responded to the scene and helped to canvass the area surrounding the location of the shooting. An area of Joseph Avenue is closed down while the investigation is underway.

Chief Smith and Mayor Malik Evans spoke at an 8 a.m. press conference at the public safety building Friday.
Rochester Mayor Evans released the following statement:

Tonight, there were two Rochester Police officers shot; one is critically wounded. We are sending our strongest prayers that he survives his injuries.

The tragic gun violence in Rochester must come to an end. Today, we declared a gun violence emergency in our community and this shooting is proof that we are indeed, in an emergency.

Our police officers are out there sacrificing their lives for us every day. They perform their jobs in dangerous conditions as we go about our daily lives and we owe them a great debt of gratitude.

I pray for the comfort of the officers shot tonight, and for their families, friends, and all of their fellow first responders.

Candidate for Congress and former RPD chief La'Ron Singletary released the following statement:

“As the former Police Chief, my heart is hurting and I am thinking of the men and women of the RPD after learning that two former colleagues were shot during a detail on Bauman Street, killing one and injuring another. These brave heroes were doing their job protecting the citizens of our city and were viciously attacked by a coward who has no regard for human life. Our city is under siege, and we must stand with those who have sworn an oath to serve and protect us. Join me in praying for all the men and women of the Rochester Police Department and especially for the two heroes who knowingly put themselves in harm’s way in service to our city and its citizens."

Statement by the Reverend Lewis W. StewartOn the Shooting of Rochester Police Officers on Bauman Street
We have learned that two Rochester police officers who were on duty on Bauman Street wereseriously wounded by gunfire by an unknown assailant, and likewise a bystander waswounded. We are praying for these individuals and their families. On this week, there were several moremurders and woundings by gun violence. We are asking the community that if you have any information concerning the perpetrator or any perpetrators of gun violence in our community, please contact the proper authoritiesimmediately. We must get these killers off the streets and make our community safe. Publicsafety is vital. We are under siege. The plague of gun violence is rampant, vicious, and sickening. It cannot and must not betolerated. Those who callously assault others with the intent purpose of depriving them of their precious lives must be punished quickly and severely. We support Mayor Evans and Chief Smith in their implementation of plans to stem the plagueof violence in our community. Gun violence is a public health problem. Again, we lift up prayers for these officers, who put their lives on the line, the victims of gunviolence, and our community. For more information, please contact Rev. STATEMENT FROM MONROE COUNTY EXECUTIVE ADAM BELLO
“A
ll of Monroe County mourns today as we learn Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, one of the brave Rochester police officers shot on Bauman Street last night, succumbed to his injuries. There are no words to adequately express the heartbreak and loss suffered by his family and our community through this senseless murder. This was a despicable act of violence, emblematic of the ongoing wave of gang violence and shootings plaguing our city. This officer died a hero, making the ultimate sacrifice to protect our community and make our streets safer. May we never forget his service and sacrifice. Our h
earts go out to Officer Mazurkiewicz’s
family, friends and fellow officers and we pray for the rapid recovery of Officer Sino Seng. I pledge to continue my close work with Mayor Evans, Chief Smith, and Sheriff Baxter to ensure our public safety, and will make any necessary county resources available to these efforts. I have ordered flags at all Monroe County facilities to fly at half-staff in honor of Officer Mazurkiewicz

Statement of Chief David Smith
Yesterday morning, at 11am, I was asked by the media “how dangerous is it out there for the Officers of the
Rochester Police Department
?”
My response was that every day, the men and women of this department leave home, not knowing if they are going to return home at the end of their shift. 10 hours later, Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, a father, a husband, and a 29-year veteran of the Rochester Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on Bauman Street while in service to our community. Last night, Officer Mazurkiewicz and his partner, Officer Sino Seng, were attacked in a cowardly ambush and fell victim to the very violence in our community that we are trying to combat. Officer Mazurkiewicz was shot at least once in the upper body. He was transported to Strong Hospital, where despite heroic efforts, he passed away. Officer Seng, an 8-year veteran of the Rochester Police Department was shot at least once in the lower body and transported to Rochester General Hospital. Thankfully, he was treated, released, and now recuperating from his injuries at home with his wife and children. In addition, during this attack a female bystander was also struck by gunfire and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
During this critical incident, the full force of this region’s law enforcement responded to the scene. I would like to thank the United States Marshall’s Service
, ATF, New York State Police, New York State Parole, Monroe
County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, Monroe County Probation, Town of Greece
Police, Town of Irondequoit Police, Town of Gates Police, Town of Brighton Police, Town of Webster Police, Village of East Rochester Police and any other agency that responded to assist. This same full force, is being utilized to bring whomever is responsible for this heinous act, to justice. This is an ongoing investigation and updates will be provided as they become available. As we speak, the brave men and women of the Rochester Police Department are continuing to protect our community, despite this horrific and shocking loss to our family
