GENEVA, N.Y. — Police arrested a man who they say mailed a hand grenade to the Geneva Police Department Public Safety Building.

The building went into lockdown on Tuesday after it received two suspicious packages, one of which had a grenade inside. 57-year-old Melvin Francis Lackey is charged with placing the false bomb threat, a felony.

Geneva police said they received the suspicious packages at around 10:30 a.m. from the U.S postal service. An X-ray machine showed that one package contained several bottles filled with liquid and the grenade.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Rochester Police Department bomb squads were requested by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and Geneva Police to help investigate the packages.

The building was put on lockdown and a hyper-reach was put out to the community. no one was hurt.
Lackey was arrested after a search warrant was conducted at his home.
