Senate candidates weigh in on bail reform ahead of this year's elections Empty Senate candidates weigh in on bail reform ahead of this year's elections

Rochester, N.Y. — The rise in violent crime in Rochester this year is expected to be a major issue in this year's primary elections.

The North Clinton Avenue neighborhood, where a 3-year-old boy was recently shot, is part of State Senator Jeremy Cooney’s district.

Today, I spoke with Cooney and his Republican challenger, former Gates Police Chief Jim VanBrederode, about the recent violence in that area, and bail reform concerns in Rochester.

Cooney says he's not sure the public uproar over the issue is fully warranted.

“I would say that bail reform, in its purest way is working,” Cooney said. “We are not criminalizing poverty - people are not being held because of how much money they have or do not have in their wallets. That is wrong, I think both of us can agree on that.”

Cooney added that he believes the current policies are effective, but lawmakers should always be thinking about ways to improve the law, in the interest of public safety

“Changes like allowing local judges, in their discretion, to be able to hold individuals who have been repeat offenders or have been charged with a gun-related crime,” said Cooney, “Why, because that is common sense. it is going to allow our community to be safer if we empower local judges to make those types of determinations.”

VanBrederode disagrees with Cooney's views on the topic, saying bail reform was sold to the public under false pretenses. He says he and other law enforcement officials expressed their concerns before bail reform was passed.

“When you have that one party, super majority rule, you do not need to listen to the conversations, and you just do what you think you want to do,” said VanBrederode. “Your personal agenda kind of comes first. And now, we are sitting here paying for those oversights that were made.”

VanBrederode also said there should be more than one voice impacting change in Albany.

"Without a voice at the table, a lot of these laws get passed, and a lot of them are pretty radical as these reforms work," he said. "So, we are seeing an uptick in the violence - repeat offenders continuing to offend. We can fix this - we have a great city - the problem is, the public safety [issue] overshadows all the good things that are happening here in Rochester.”

One thing the candidates agree on is public safety should be an elected official’s number one priority.

Early voting starts October 29th, and election day is Tuesday November 8th.

Joe Morelle said the bail reform works in what its intended we need to defund police and start policing ourselves because this way everyone wins and a few kids who shot that's part of life he said.he said he support bail reform.

Business are being shop lifted than hire security or leave New York State.
